As advertised: Batchig IS a sweet kiss from your grandmother.
Batchig is the daughter of Mayrig -- certainly the best Armenian Restaurant in Lebanon. Owners and managers Aline Kamakian and Serge Maacaron produced an inspired and beautiful eaterie drawing on their decade long experience with Mayrig.
The result, this fantastic venue is not a purely Armenian restaurant but offers a fresh and modern twist on regional dishes gathered from old Cilicia to the Mediterranean sea line; from Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Greece up to the Marseille… the menu items were the family recipes of the “Armenian Ladies” that had worked for Mayrig for the past 10 years.
Top service, and a beautiful setting with both indoor and outdoor seating produce the right frame to dig in. Begin with the great Eggplant Salad, a faboulous Habra Nayeh (raw meat tartar), the succulent Fishna (in a pot: grilled minced meat balls topped with Joghurt and wild cherry sauce), fine main dishes from the grill and baked variations from the oven (Lahme b Ajin or the cheese filled Arpi).
This then should be followed by the desserts that couldn't be more seductive. The elegant Mount Ararat - Rose, Marzipan, Almond and Astha ice cream garnished with Lebanese cotton candy and pistachios - or lighter variations of cakes and sweets.
The deserts are indeed a reason to go in themselves, afternoon tea or coffee would make a good excuse.
