Kampai

This high-end Japanese restaurant screams cosmopolitan chic with a side of wasabi.

Kampai (Japanese for “cheers”) is centrally located in the dynamic heart of downtown where shoppers and fine-diners flock. Impression upon entering: Sleek and sophisticated.

Upon arriving, the appetizers will call your name. They definitely called mine. The universally-loved Rock Shrimp drenched in a matrix of spicy mayonnaise is elegantly served in a martini glass. Die-hard salmon-lovers such as myself will get their kicks from the Crispy Salmon Salad; a pyramid of tender salmon cubes garnished with black caviar, a sprinkle of crisps and decorative greens.

Food is ushered in on elegant black plates, adding points to presentation. The fair service does not dampen the experience but leaves room for improvement. With a smorgasbord of ura maki to choose from, you can challenge your taste buds to something besides the cliches (california roll, I am talking about you). Mango, avocado and salmon roll surprisingly well together in Rainbow. The cheesy maki starring the perfect pair, salmon and cream cheese, makes my eyes roll in their sockets. Topped with a green halo, Angel maki unites shrimp, tuna and crab in one neat bite.

If you cannot stomach the thought of eating raw fish, there are cooked Japanese and Asian fusion dishes to opt for instead. Reminiscent of pad thai, the nutty peanut noodles comes with a guarantee of satisfaction. Consider the tender beef teriyaki for a melt-in-your-mouth inducing choice. High prices seem not to influence the steady influx of customers. Reservations definitely recommended.
